Wanted: foster parents

Difficult economic times can be hard on families, particular those already under stress. So, understandably, child welfare workers are concerned about the days ahead.
When children must be taken into custody, the best place for them is in the family-like setting of a caring foster home. Sadly, too few kids in the GTA get that chance because children’s aid societies don’t have nearly enough foster families to meet the need.

Despite the bleak economic outlook, some things will get better in Ontario this year.
As of today, new laws take effect that will enable poor teenagers to get increased access to dental care, men to obtain free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests, and motorists to feel safer because trucks will be equipped with speed limiters.

But what about the more common teenage experiences of sexual harassment, homophobia and dating violence outside our schools? Is there a role for teachers to make sure our youth aren’t just respected and safe inside school walls but also prepared for what faces them in broader society? Yes, the province has answered.

A person’s smile is one of the first things that gets them noticed. Is it genuine? Shy? Full of joy?
But for many poor Ontarians, smiling isn’t so simple. Teeth are expensive to take care of properly. And a mouth with blackened and missing teeth puts a life of poverty on public display.
Bad teeth leave children vulnerable to ridicule from their peers and make it difficult for adults to get good jobs.
