Grade 7 has been a banner year for 12-year-old Matthew Leaton. His project on earthquakes was a winner of the science fair at his Brampton middle school. In February, he was chosen to make a presentation at the assembly honouring Black History Month.
And eight months into the school year, he has been suspended only once.

OTTAWA – New statistics suggest serious criminal offences were on the decline well before the federal Conservative government launched its anti-crime campaign in Parliament.
The figures, reported by Statistics Canada on Tuesday, indicate police-reported crime was less serious overall in 2007, the year after the Tories took office, than it was a decade earlier. The agency says the crime rate had also dropped, but to a lesser degree.

The “school information finder” – a new feature on the provincial government’s website – has caused a stir.
Critics worry that it could “encourage further social polarization.” Defenders argue that parents have a “right to know” how their kid’s school ranks. “If you were to ask parents whether or not they want this information, I know what their answer is,” said Premier Dalton McGuinty.
What is all the fuss about?

Family court judges are misguidedly harming children by granting sole custody to one parent – usually the mother – in bitter divorce battles, says a comprehensive new report.
Too many children are being “robbed of the love of one parent” by a legal system that is out of touch with the needs of children and treats them like property to be won or lost, says Edward Kruk, an expert on child custody issues.
