Economists calculate hidden price of tax relief

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion – Economists calculate hidden price of tax relief
April 22, 2009.   Carol Goar

One side of the story is easy to tell and appealing to hear: Vote for tax cuts and you’ll get to keep more of the money you earn.

The other side of the story is hard to quantify and easy to discount: Vote for tax cuts and you’ll get fewer – or worse – public services.

No wonder the tax-versus-services debate has been so lopsided for the past 15 years. Who wouldn’t pick cash over nebulous public services? Who couldn’t use more disposable income?

Test scores, yes, but… [“school information finder” on the provincial government’s website]

Monday, April 13th, 2009

TheStar.com – Opinion/Editorial – Test scores, yes, but…
Apr 12, 2009.

The “school information finder” – a new feature on the provincial government’s website – has caused a stir.

Critics worry that it could “encourage further social polarization.” Defenders argue that parents have a “right to know” how their kid’s school ranks. “If you were to ask parents whether or not they want this information, I know what their answer is,” said Premier Dalton McGuinty.

What is all the fuss about?

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

TheStar.com – News/ParentCentral.ca – Children harmed by sole custody, report says
April 03, 2009.   Susan Pigg,  Living reporter

Family court judges are misguidedly harming children by granting sole custody to one parent – usually the mother – in bitter divorce battles, says a comprehensive new report.

Too many children are being “robbed of the love of one parent” by a legal system that is out of touch with the needs of children and treats them like property to be won or lost, says Edward Kruk, an expert on child custody issues.
