There is no Charter right to abuse [Hate crimes]
TheGlobeandMail.com – Opinions/editorial – There is no Charter right to abuse: Parents have no constitutional right to teach their children to hate or kill
May. 29, 2009.
Parents have no constitutional right to teach their children to hate or kill. A Winnipeg parental-rights case involving a 7-year-old girl who believes that killing black people is the right thing to do appears to be a case of severe emotional abuse, and nothing in the Canadian Constitution gives parents licence to abuse their children.

The sad fate of too many native women
TheStar.com – Opinion – The sad fate of too many native women
May 20, 2009. Carol Goar
Twenty-six of the missing aboriginal women turned up dead on Robert Pickton’s pig farm. The bodies of 321 others were found under bridges, in rooming houses, on rural roads, in their apartments. The remaining 173 are unaccounted for.

More than 500 aboriginal women have disappeared since 1970. Most were younger than 30.

Daycare buckpassing
TheStar.com – Opinion/Editorial – Daycare buckpassing
May 14, 2009
The provincial government has come through with $18 million to save 8,500 daycare spaces that were about to close because of expiring federal funding. That is good news.
But as welcome as Tuesday’s announcement is, the problem has not been solved. The provincial funding is only a reprieve, not a long term solution. And it just maintains the existing number of affordable child care spaces when what is needed is a dramatic expansion, with 15,000 families in Toronto alone on the wait list.

Mediation will help divorce cases
TheStar.com – Opinion/Letter – Mediation will help divorce cases
May 10, 2009
Re: 1 divorce: 54 hearings, 5 judges, $200,000, Living, May 8
Susan Pigg’s article is one of an number of Toronto Star articles she has written on the family court processing of divorces.
Implicit in all of them is the uncritical acceptance of the notion that more judges and court resources will solve problems relating to delay, cost, custody battles and the parental alienation of children.
