While it may seem that children in Canada have luxuries and advantages that they have never had before, for too many children, both in Canada and around the world, this is not the case. Internationally, between 500 million and 1.5 billion children experience violence, based on annual estimates. In Canada almost one child out of every ten still lives in poverty, and 37% of the people helped by food banks in Canada in the last year were children.

It is time to expand adoptions of native children so that non-native parents can give them the love and nurturing that any child needs. It is scandalous that a vast population of native children are in state care with no hope of being adopted into a family. That scandal has come into public view in an arson case in Sudbury featuring two native boys, 12 and 13, who burned down a popular community centre, the Steelworkers Hall.

Critics of Ontario’s plan to offer full-day kindergarten to all 4- and 5-year-olds have landed on the beguiling idea that we’d all be better off if the government simply gave parents the money instead.
“Parents could receive a minimum of $9,199 dollars per child, annually,” argues the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada, a group dedicated to supporting “mom-and-dad marriage and family life.”

When Ontario’s Finance Minister announced last month that the provincial deficit would be substantially higher than predicted, it was followed up by talk of restraint. “We will change how we do business in this province,” he said. “We are becoming an even leaner and even more efficient provider of quality public services.”

Twenty-years ago today, Canada’s politicians stood in the House of Commons and committed to ending child poverty by 2000. Nine years past that deadline, success is still nowhere in sight.
Nationally, one in 10 children is raised in poverty, according to a report being released today. In First Nations communities, that figure rises to a staggering one in four.
How can we allow this to continue?

The largest project in Canada’s history to study the link between mental illness and homelessness kicks off Monday, offering hope – and a home – to more than 1,300 street people across the country.
Housing first, rehabilitation will follow – that’s the philosophy behind a national research project on homelessness and mental illness being launched by the new Mental Health Commission of Canada.
