Re:Wanted: national strategy for aging, Editorial, May 2

For years there has been an alarming need for affordable, assisted-living accommodations for seniors, as well as appropriate hours of home care services integrated with home visits by primary care physicians, and support for families who care for their parents. Yet, billions of dollars of government funding flow to the lucrative business of institutionalization.

Seniors who would be considered candidates for institutions should be given the choice to qualify for the same amount of funding to help them stay in their homes. Such a significant amount of money would go a long way toward making “aging in place” a much deserved reality.
