Too little money for life’s basics

The city and the provincial government expect us who are on Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program to somehow out of the Basic Needs and Shelter benefits also be able to purchase the following sundries: laundry detergent, fabric bleach, household cleansers, deodorant, bandages, antibacterial cream, sanitary pads, lotion, toilet paper, body soap, shampoo, hair conditioner, dish soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, sandwich bags, freezer bags, garbage bags (kitchen and green bags) and much more.

The cost of sundries takes money away from food and rent.

I also wish to point out the two governments that there are months, such as July, which are five weeks long. We are expected to somehow purchase food for that extra week.

With the increase of $9 in bus passes, I can no longer buy a package of meat or four litres of lactose-free milk which costs $8.99.

I really wish that our politicians would take this into account.

Many people do not realize that we can only go to food banks once a month. The food bank on Sherbrooke St. allows us to return for old bread.
