Groundbreaking Toronto survey on student mental health can create change
Feb 14 2013
… students from grades 7 to 12 reported surprisingly high levels of stress, ranging from anxiousness to loss of confidence and loneliness… many of whom are watching parents live through tough economic times while obsessing about their own uncertain future… 46 per cent of high school students (and 34 per cent of upper elementary students) said they were not comfortable seeking help from any adult in their school… Student-led programs cost little but the board also needs to address its funding for school social workers and youth workers. Their specialized training and insight can help turn lives around.

Boys will be boys – schools need to understand that
Feb. 14 2013
It’s no surprise that schools subtly discriminate against boys. After all, they are increasingly run by women – women who, as girls, were extremely good at sitting still, paying attention and co-operating. The schools have become more and more hostile to boys’ inclinations and interests. They have abolished competition in favour of co-operation – even though boys thrive on competition. They’ve outlawed rough-and-tumble play… In high school, they bore boys to death instead of teaching them how to make and build stuff.

Ontario should support Crown wards until age 25
Jan. 23, 2013
Sadly, youth who have grown up as Ontario Crown wards in foster care or group homes are cut loose at the age of 18, leaving many struggling to finish high school — let alone post-secondary education. It’s a cruel way to treat vulnerable kids, but the Ontario government has now been given a blueprint to fix this fundamental flaw in its child welfare system.

In defence of transformation Change we can (try to) believe in.
January 9, 2013
Technology can extend the reach of instruction without a proportional increase in time and cost, but more importantly, it can free the precious resource of the individual instructor’s personal attention from being consumed in presentation of basic facts and elementary principles… expanding the use of hybrid courses, experiential learning, problem-based learning and other techniques also allow essential contact time to be focused on high-value interaction…

First Nations: The Long Shadow of Assimilation
Jan. 3, 2013
$7.5 billion – Estimated annual cost of doing nothing to resolve First Nations employment and social problems in Canada (in 1996 alone)… $169-$189 million – Estimated federal government underfunding of capital expenditures on reserves annually. The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) says 40 new schools, at a cost of $12.5 million each, and 85,000 housing units would have to be built to meet current needs.

Freezing Toronto social service and recreation budgets amounts to a cut
Jan. 08, 2013
Budgets for services ranging from city-operated child care centres to shelters for the homeless have been flat-lined, locking in and expanding the previous years’ deep cuts. The impact on our most vulnerable residents has been, and will continue to be, devastating. Today, there are 22,000 Toronto families on the waiting list for subsidized daycare spaces… the number of homeless people looking in vain for a bed or a meal will grow too.

How India’s rape culture came to Canada
Jan 3, 2013
Many of the South Asian immigrants who’ve settled in Canada since the 1970s have been so afraid of losing their culture that they have ferociously clung to some of their worst customs… I sometimes feel like I have walked through a time machine, sending me back to rural India, a village in Pakistan, or an Afghan mountain cave… Perhaps a new generation will help push for change.

Can the First Nations Education Act achieve a passing grade?
Dec. 07 2012
three principles will dominate the AFN’s approach to the bill: 1. First Nations are entitled to adequate and predictable funding that meets the needs of every native on reserve. 2. Any legislation that affects first nations education on reserve must have the consent of the chiefs before it can be introduced into Parliament, much less passed by it. 3. The preservation of native culture, especially native languages, must be at the heart of any native curriculum.

Ontario needs to get on with the job of tackling autism
Dec. 03, 2012
The Liberals need a reminder that good governments care for their most vulnerable citizens — after the television cameras are turned off. They do so with actions, not empty words that leave parents of young children crushed by a bureaucratic mess blocking timely care… It’s time to stop dithering. Empty promises waste more than time; they squander lives.
