Re: Good Policy, Risky Politics; Voters Could Penalize Tories For Immigration Plan, John Ivison, March 14.

Imagine being highly skilled, but losing your job because government-implemented draconian affirmative action policies. At the same time, the countries that can use your skills prevent you from emigrating because they don’t want to poach from developing countries. It’s a Catch-22.

Many people possessing the skills that are in demand all over the world are unemployed in countries like South Africa, merely because they don’t meet the government’s affirmative action criteria. They desperately need to emigrate, and completed their immigration papers a long time ago, but are stuck in the overloaded system.

Imagine a life where you are terrified to go to bed at night because home invasions have become the most dreaded crime in the country. Imagine fearing to stop at a traffic light, because car highjacking frequently results in death.

Imagine the hell for prospective immigrants from that region. They qualify as skilled workers, they are fluent in English, they are eager to move, but they have to wait an agonizing four years for their applications to be processed because of the immigration processing backlog. Many die waiting.

The Conservative government’s new immigration strategy is a godsend for these people.
