TheStar.com – Opinion – Real life lessons from the street
Nov 12, 2008. Carol Goar

One of the delegates brought along a sleeping bag. He stretched it out and fell asleep whenever the proceedings bored him. Another lost his train of thought at the microphone, apologized, and said he might have to go back to his shelter for his medications. A third, clean after years of cocaine use, urged others to follow her example, but added proudly that her addiction had never impaired her sexual performance.

Obama puts poor back on agenda

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

TheStar.com – Atkinson – Obama puts poor back on agenda
November 08, 2008. Laurie Monsebraaten, Social Justice Reporter

As part of his compelling “Yes We Can” campaign to make meaningful change in the lives of average Americans, President-elect Barack Obama promised to cut poverty in half within a decade.

Canada has no plan to fight poverty. And Stephen Harper’s Conservatives didn’t offer one during our recent federal election.

But with Obama’s historic win this week, many anti-poverty activists here believe new pressure is on Ottawa to address social and economic inequality.

Don’t mess with medicare

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion/letter – Don’t mess with medicare
November 08, 2008

While attempting to raze our medicare system, one that serves us all pretty equally, “special interests” with more money than decency plot to circumvent our interests for their shareholders. And as usual, working-class families get no say on any of it.

But if our cherished medicare system lapses as a result of these “special interests,” I and many others of my ilk suggest for their sakes they all live in concrete fortified bunkers.

‘Common good’ rediscovered

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

TheStar.com – Opinion – ‘Common good’ rediscovered
November 04, 2008. Linda McQuaig

The pivotal moment for me in the U.S. presidential campaign came during the Republican convention last August, when Rudolph Giuliani couldn’t get the words “community organizer” out of his mouth without laughing.

After eight years of Republican rule – during which the rich happily trampled on the poor in their rush to the Wall Street trough – the notion that someone would organize the poor to assert their rights struck both Giuliani and his Republican audience as simply funny.
