TheStar.com – Opinion – Not enough action on poverty file
December 29, 2008. Avvy Go
Many people of Chinese descent believe that to welcome the new year, we must first send off the old by cleaning our homes, paying off our debts and taking care of the unfinished business of the past year. Only by putting our house in order can we fully embrace all the prosperity that a new year brings.

TheStar.com – Opinion/editorial – Smiles that say poverty
December 27, 2008
A person’s smile is one of the first things that gets them noticed. Is it genuine? Shy? Full of joy?
But for many poor Ontarians, smiling isn’t so simple. Teeth are expensive to take care of properly. And a mouth with blackened and missing teeth puts a life of poverty on public display.
Bad teeth leave children vulnerable to ridicule from their peers and make it difficult for adults to get good jobs.

TheStar.com – news/Ontario/parentcentral.ca – Grandparents fear loss of subsidy
December 27, 2008. Emily Mathieu, STAFF REPORTER
When strangers are in the house, Kyle perches on the stairs, tiny fingers wrapped around the thin metal bars supporting the railing, peering at the intruders in his kitchen.

TheStar.com – Opinion – Don’t blame Canada’s banks for problems
December 27, 2008. Nancy Hughes Anthony
These are unprecedented times. The global financial crisis is now having an economic impact in towns and cities across the country. Many commentators, including this newspaper, have criticized Canada’s banks for cutting back on lending and not passing the full Bank of Canada interest rate cuts on to their customers.
But is this criticism accurate or justified? I would argue that it is based on a number of myths and misunderstandings about banking.

TheStar.com – Opinion – Poverty a blight on the season: At Christmastime, the pressure mounts for those who spend every day just trying to survive
December 24, 2008. Michael Creek
By most standards, I am not a rich man.
In 1993, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After a long battle to rid my body of this cancer, I found myself in a very new place – my illness, which I survived, had dealt me a cruel blow. Told that I would never work again, I started down the road to poverty.

December 23, 2008
David Pecaut
There is an impending sense of dread in the GTA as we watch an economic tsunami bear down on us from the horizon. Despite having one of the most resilient and diversified urban economies in the world, we know there are no tidal breakwaters that can protect us from the U.S. and global downturns.

TheStar.com – Opinion – Social programs pack powerful economic punch: Families with pressing needs are most likely to spend whatever they get as soon as they get it
December 22, 2008. Ken Battle, Sherri Torjman, Michael Mendelson
The main threat we face today is deflation – meaning falling prices and consequent mass unemployment. Most observers, from the International Monetary Fund to small-town car dealerships, agree this is the challenge of the hour.
While easing interest rates further will help, they can go only to zero – and already have in the United States.

TheStar.com – Opinion – Ontario’s Peter Pan theory of poverty reduction
