Speak your mind – and erase a stigma
TheGlobeandMail.com – Speak your mind – and erase a stigma
June 19, 2008. EDWARD GREENSPON
I have a young friend named Alyse. Well, she’s not really my friend; she’s my daughter Bailey’s friend. But I’ve known her since she was in Grade 2 and she’s the most effervescent, courteous and accomplished child I’ve ever met. She’s small in stature, but creates a huge presence.

A belated but necessary apology
TheStar.com – comment – A belated but necessary apology
June 17, 2008. John Croutch, Community Editorial Board
I am writing this for all those Canadians who may question why the federal government needed to apologize to aboriginal peoples for crimes that many might consider to be no more than a regrettable chapter in a checkered Canadian past.
In reading this, you will notice that I choose my words carefully. I do so because I, like many aboriginal people, have become accustomed to being told that aboriginals do not hold a patent on suffering.

Daycare system is failing families
TheStar.com – comment/letter – Daycare system is failing families
June 16, 2008
Re:Labour congress gives Ontario `D’ in child care – June 14
Ontario Children and Youth Services Minister Deb Matthews must be completely out of touch with the daycare crisis. When I was only four months’ pregnant, I put my child on the waiting lists of four licensed infant daycare centres in Toronto’s east end. Without it, she’d still be in her abusive marriage or sitting at home on welfare, instead of going to school to get a better life, she said.

An issue of birth and taxes
TheStar.com – business – An issue of birth and taxes
May 27, 2008. JAMES DAW
Taxing families instead of parents could produce more babies, argues a University of Calgary economist and professor of public policy.
So the next time governments have room to cut taxes, Jack Mintz suggests the first priority should be to equalize tax treatement across family types.

New use for old schools
TheStar.com – comment/editorial – New use for old schools
May 26, 2008
School boards across Ontario have been watching their enrolments fall for years as a result of rapidly declining fertility rates. That, in turn, has led to half-empty facilities and painful decisions about school closings.
But as a new report from People for Education points out, the education system is resistant to proposals to put these underused schools to better community uses.
