Re: ‘Shared care’ will help psych shortage, Special Section, May 2

As a psychiatrist for 22 years, I know that treating patients with mental illness can be a challenge, but it can also be very rewarding. I also know that when physicians and psychiatrists work together, patients benefit by gaining access to the services of a psychiatrist that is integrated with their primary care.

Currently, this pairing of resources between family physicians and psychiatrists is unique rather than mainstream and that has to change. Psychiatrists in Ontario are pleased that the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care has identified mental health as one of his priorities.

We look forward to working with the government to ensure patients are getting the mental health care services they need and deserve.
