Standard of Living
1. The States Parties to the present Covenant recognize the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions. From Article 11, International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

In Canada, major contributing factors relating to income and standard of living are determined by Conditions of Work and Vocational Training opportunities that exist. In their report to the UN, the Government of Canada argues that existing Social Security policy and income support programs are intended to meet minimum standards in the provision of adequate food and clothing, augmented through services provided by volunteer and other non-governmental organizations. Specific legislation and government social policy that does exist, in relation to Article 11, is concerned primarily with the provision of adequate housing, along with a growing emphasis on responsible agricultural practices and food security. That being said, non-government organizations have increasingly been required to help many Canadians access the necessities of life.
