The disease schizophrenia seems to be ignored by most societies. This may be from lack of information, so here are some numbers: there are 280,000 Canadians with schizophrenia, twice the number of those with Alzheimer’s, five times the number of those with multiple sclerosis and 60 times more than those with muscular dystrophy. Forty per cent of those diagnosed with schizophrenia will attempt suicide with 13 per cent being successful. This disease should be considered a medical emergency with resources to help both the patient and family.
