Nightmarish Commercial Simply Wrong: Healthcare Outsourcing is not Privatization

Friday, July 14th, 2023

The government of Ontario should think about how to contract for insured services with private clinics without causing staffing problems for traditional providers, but should  begin experimenting with this model in the specialties and places where the prospects seem most promising. And it should carefully monitor outcomes.

An Unparalleled and Urgent Task Faces Premiers Next Week

Friday, July 7th, 2023

At the top of the list is helping the 6.5 million people without access to primary care… Equally urgent is the need to beef up home and community care to make it possible for our rapidly aging population to age both well and where they want to, whether in their own homes or in a community setting. These actions on primary and senior care would ease the pressure on beleaguered hospitals and their emergency rooms.

Private health care in Alta. is harming the public system – new report

Friday, May 19th, 2023

The expansion of private health care in Alberta has lead to longer wait times in the public system and fewer surgeries overall… The rest of Canada, and especially Ontario, should pay close attention to what Parkland has to tell us about the validity of the idea of resorting to the private sector to cut healthcare wait times.  The bottom line is that the private health care appears to be a false Messiah when it claims it can miraculously cure what ails our public health system.

Heath care will only succeed through collaboration, not through competition

Wednesday, April 19th, 2023

Competition is… what happens in the most dysfunctional parts of our Canadian health systems, where value for money is most elusive and frustration is highest…  Service backlogs. Human resources shortages. Mental health impacts. The co-ordinated effort required to manage recovery will probably dwarf what we have just achieved. More competition and fragmentation is the last thing we need. Collaboration is our only hope.

Supreme Court of Canada won’t hear appeal involving private health care

Thursday, April 6th, 2023

Two Vancouver private health facilities and four patients argued that provisions of the Medicare Protection Act violate their constitutional rights due to long waits for care in B.C.’s publicly funded system… Justice John Steeves said in the original court ruling that while long waits for care might increase the risk to some patients, the provisions were justified by the overall objective of supporting a system where access to health care is based on need, not the ability to pay.

An Ontario doctor’s wait-list database is saving patient lives. It’s madness a doctor had to do it himself

Saturday, March 25th, 2023

It’s a searchable database of specialists and procedures, by location and wait times. Yet by simply showing the full extent of available specialists in his community, this young family doctor vividly saw how access could be speeded up, reducing patient anguish and hardship… Qamar and his partners hope the province will see the database’s value and step in to fund the minimal costs of updating it.

Making time for that vital “one more thing” in health care

Saturday, March 11th, 2023

Team-based care is one of four opportunities for innovation and transformation that Canada’s physicians are calling for… Ensuring doctors, nurses, and other health professionals can practise across Canada more easily will help… Next, let’s cut more red tape on data gathering and information sharing… Finally, doing better by health workers means integrated workforce planning on a national scale.

Federal health minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced Friday that he will be reducing the Canada Health Transfer to eight provinces, including Ontario, for breaches of federal policy regarding billing patients for medically necessary costs… Further, Duclos signalled that Friday’s announcement will not be the end of the measures the federal government is considering to reinforce the public aspect of Canada’s health-care system.

The remedies for Ontario’s ailing health system

Monday, March 6th, 2023

… the quiet crisis of closed ERs in Ontario’s more remote communities should be another wake-up call. Beyond the ER crisis is the shortage of family doctors who would lighten that ER load… about 2.2 million Ontario residents were without a family doctor… The emphasis has been on creating primary-care teams… [but] about 75 per cent of family doctors function without such teams in place.
